Nutrition Study on the Group Feeding in Korea Social Work Crganization

Abstract
Social work activities have been somewhat lagging since the last Korean War which almost devastated the whole country bringing serious economical setback. Necessitated by desperate demand, however, all kinds of social work organizations emerged at the end of the War.
Most of such organizations, govermantal or private faced serious financial difficulties, and unbalanced managements were common. The result was unproper and poor feeding program which occupied greatest part in their budget.
Realizing the urgent necessity of improving their feeding program the auther visited some nurseries, orphanages and also the nursing homes for the old, and investigated the general states of health, dieting and sanitation. It is hoped that this intensive study reveal and improve the problem areas in the administrative management for such free feeding programs.
The investigation started from March, 1964 and completed in June, 1968. During these years a number of nurseries, orphanages, nursing homes for the old and laborers¢¥ free meal centers in the vicinity of Seoul were surveyed. Such organizations are listed below:
A. ......*.......
B .......*.......
C. Nursing Homes for the old:
D. Free meal centers:
1.
2. Seoul Grand Station
3. " " "
4. " " "
5. " " "
The free meal centers in above were fully financed by local goverments.
The most concerned problem focussed in the survey was the nutrition state of the beneficiaries. Their health was so bad that the physical weakness was noticed at a glance. It was found that their malnutrition was largely due to the lack of variety in menu rather than the
shortage of their main food, the rice. Ironically, the lacking stuffs were rather inexpensive and abundant seasonal vegetables which could be ineasily obtained throughout the year. Vegetable in their dialy soup, salad, etc. might well have improved the nutrition status. It was known that the dialy vegetable requirement in adult was 360 to 390 grams of chlorophyl and 280 to 300 grams of carotinic vegetable, thus making total 640 to 690 grams of vegetable per day.
The actual vegatable intake of young adults and children, however, was only one third of this requirement. Considering such serious fact, it is strongly urged that such defect and malnutrition should be properly improved under reasonable management. It applies to all respective agencies.
Although this problem cannot be solved basically without sufficient fund obtainment, it is urged that more priority in budget allocation be given to the feeding than to the clothing and housing. Most of the above organizations were not much using margarine or vegetable oil which were rich in vitamin F. The balanced supply of margarine not only promote the body weight but also essential for seniles as well as for growing childeen.
In planning diet improvement, more attention should be paid to protein, mineral and vitamins than to carbohydrates which can be fairly well supplied without too much diffculty. The menu should more frequently include fishs, either fresh or dried, for protein and mineral, and vegetable for vitamins.
Although finance is the basic problem, the undernurishment and physical degrading should be seriously considered, and the program re-evaluated. This problem can be solved appeiably by purchasing better and variety foods equal amount of money.
In order to provide these social work organizations with better, scientific feeding program intensive research as well as the training of responsible dietitians is very essential.
Presenting this paper, the author, again, firmly felt that the promotion of people¢¥s physical fitness greatly contribute to the nation¢¥s harmonized development.
